Poetry & Music

Hello! I'm Cheryl...
... and I'm so glad you are here! As both a professional musician and poet, I love what words and music can do for our souls, for social change, for connecting us to something bigger and more beautiful than we've assumed is attainable.
I hope you'll find something worth reading, something worth hearing, and maybe even something worth keeping!

Short Bio
Cheryl Seely Savage is a professional musician, poet, graduate student, and mother of eight. She is the author of four poetry collections: Give Me a Fragment, Carve a Place for Me, We Have Time, and Shadowing. Her work has appeared in Exponent II, Inscape, and Kansas! Magazine.
For nearly 30 years, she has been a professional pianist, teacher, and collaborative musician. When she’s not making music, she can be found working on her Ph.D., writing another poetry collection, raising children, walking at sunrise, reading voraciously, and planning her next travel destination. Cheryl lives with her family in the beautiful Flint Hills of Kansas.

My Story
Vincent van Gogh once said "... and then, I have nature and art and poetry, and if that is not enough, what is enough?" and I would add to his wisdom: love and music.
I had the privilege of them all, being raised in a modest home full of love, literature, music, and faith. I started piano lessons and writing at the age of seven and it wasn't coincidental I loved both so intensely. Both music and writing have always been a core part of who I am!
In recent years, as I've pursued both music and poetry professionally, I have found deeper purpose and meaning in both and how easily they intertwine. After all, what is music if not poetry? And what is poetry, if not music?
I have been married to my husband for 27 years and we have 8 children (yes, eight!). We are also grandparents! Our family is the source of my absolute joy. And although I have faced debilitating Depression, chronic illness, miscarriage, the death of loved ones, and financial loss, my life is full of love, music, poetry, art, nature, and faith. And if that, dear Vincent, is not enough...

I love international travel, cluttered vision boards, yoga, honesty, walking at sunrise, ethical politics, romance, intelligent wit, long conversations, hazelnut chocolate, all four seasons, laughing with my kids, and my brilliant, devoted husband -- he has always been my biggest fan.
Originally from Idaho, I currently live with my big, beautiful, chaotic family (and 3 cats) in the Flint Hills of Kansas.
